The most popular Alpine huts
Huts are as popular a hiking destination as the peaks. Why? Whoever has enjoyed the famous Bruggeralm breakfast and the hospitality of the mountain hut Champion will know why. The following four tips show how inviting and cosy huts in the Kitzbüheler Alpen can be. They should give you an appetite for the numerous good Alp refuges and mountain inns in the region.
Angerl Alm adventure
The snug and the menu in the Angerl Alm in Erpfendorf are small, but the experience is massive. You get to see all sorts of animals up close here and can let of steam in the big adventure playground of the natural surroundings. “It’s always good fun up here”, recounts landlady Gabi Wörgötter, who will indulge you with home-made goods – fresh bread, exquisite cheeses and her own bacon. There is also the fantastic view to the Wilder Kaiser – the only question is how long the Angerl Alm will remain a secret. You couldn’t find a more pleasant place to relax than on Gabi Wörgötter’s terrace.
The famous Bruggeralm breakfast
‘Gröstl’ (a fried dish traditionally made from potatoes, bacon and meat), ‘Kaspressknödel’ (cheese dumplings) and ‘Kaiserschmarrn’ (sugared pancake and raisins) are some of the hearty Alpine fare, which actually really taste good at 1000 metres altitude. The Alps have been offering places to stop off for a bite to eat and gather your strength at these heights for centuries. At the Mühlberger family’s Bruggeralm in Jochberg, you should get there as early as possible: those in the know make their way there early to enjoy the famous Bruggeralm breakfast with goat’s cheese, Tilsiter mountain cheese, farmhouse bread and all sorts of home-made goods - best enjoyed in the rustic snug, which is adorned with farming tools from over three centuries, or on a sunny day on the large wood terrace.
Wood and Alpine sun at the Brechhornhaus
The ancient larch shingles of the hut wall are coloured a browny-red, the aroma of Alpine specialities fills your nostrils, social get-togethers spread over the terrace, taking in the gentle rays of the Alpine sun. Summer days on the Brechhornhaus are depicted in images from a time long past, the summer fresh-atmosphere of the 1920s prevails – the view from the small window at the ancient corner seat is almost clichéd and even grandma couldn’t make the fresh baked Apfelstrudel any better. At 1700 metres altitude that is exactly what you need! http://www.alpengasthof.co.at/.
The Rigi rules the Hohe Salve
The “Rigi” inn was chosen as the most popular hut at the Mountain Hut World Championships. Given the variety of mountain huts in the Kitzbüheler Alpen this is a special honour. Fantastic culinary items make the inn on the Hohe Salve a winner for those on excursions. The panorama provides a natural advantage to start with: from the Großvenediger to the Karwendel Mountains there is summit upon summit. You can really enjoy classics like a plate of cold-cuts and ‘Kasspatzln’ (cheese noodles)! Secluded views, yet copious places to stop off for a bite to eat: one of the many contrasts in the Kitzbüheler Alpen. http://www.rigi.at/.
